Romulus Mother Acted in Self-Defense in Stabbing of 16-Year-Old Son

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has determined that a Romulus mother will not be charged in connection with the non-fatal stabbing of her 16-year-old son. On Monday October 10, 2016, at 6:15 p.m. the Romulus Police Department received two calls that a 45-year-old mother was having a domestic dispute with her son at their home located in the 6000 block of Chamberlain Street. Officers were dispatched to the location and when they arrived they observed a 16-year-old male bleeding from his leg while his mother was applying pressure to the wound. The 16-year-old was transported by medics to a local hospital where he was treated for his wounds.

The police investigation revealed that on October 10th the 16-year-old was expelled from school for 180 days and as a form of punishment his mother had taken his cell phone and radio from him. Sometime before 6:15 p.m. on the same day the mother and son had a heated verbal argument. It is alleged that the 16-year-old has a history of assaultive behavior toward other family members. The mother called the Romulus Police Department twice to come to the house to diffuse the situation, but the police did not immediately respond to the location. The mother then called her older son to the home to assist her, but the 16-year-old continued to argue with his mother. Eventually the argument escalated and the16-year-old grabbed his six-year-old brother in a head lock causing him to cry. The 16-year-old released the child and then began hitting his mother repeatedly in the head and jaw causing her head to bruise and swell. The mother got a knife from the top of the refrigerator in the kitchen to defend herself from the blows when she struck her 16- year-old son twice in the leg and the back. These facts were corroborated by the woman’s 15-year old daughter and her older son.

After a thorough review of the facts and evidence in the case it has been determined that no charges will issue. Under the law of self defense the mother was under no duty to retreat in her own home and she had an honest and reasonable belief that the use of deadly force was necessary to prevent imminent death or imminent great bodily harm when she struck her son twice with the knife. For these reasons the warrant request has been denied.

Detroit Man Charged in Non-Fatal Shooting of His Child’s Mother on Rosemont Street

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Chighland Tyrell Tucker, 30 (DOB: 5/01/86) of Detroit, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a 27-year-old Mount Pleasant woman. The victim and the defendant have a child in common.

On October 14, 2016 at 8:45 p.m., it is alleged that the defendant came to the driveway of the victim’s mother’s home located in the 12000 block of Rosemont. He walked up the victim while she was waiting outside in her car, pulled out a handgun and shot her multiple times. Police and medics responded to the scene and the victim was taken to a local hospital where she is currently receiving treatment. Earlier in the day it is alleged that Tucker came to the Rosemont house and the victim’s mother asked him to leave.

The defendant has been charged with Assault with Intent to Murder, Felonious Assault, Aggravated Stalking, Felony Firearm Second Offense, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Felony Firearm. Defendant Tucker was arraigned today in 36th District Court before Magistrate Laura Echartea. The probable cause conference is scheduled for October 24, 2016 at 9:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for October 31, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Patricia Jefferson in 36th District Court.

Detroit Man Charged in Hip Hop Shop Homicide

On October 17, 2016 Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Keith Burell Hudson, (DOB: 4/21/1975), in connection with the homicide of Marcel Dubose (DOB: 1/21/1990), both of Detroit. On October 10, 2016 at approximately 9:20 p.m., Detroit police were dispatched to a shooting at West Seven Mile and Montrose, near the location of the Hip Hop Shop owned by the defendant. Mr. Dubose was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. Investigation by the Detroit police led to the arrest and charging of Defendant Hudson in the death of Mr. Dubose. The facts and the evidence in this case will be introduced in court at the preliminary examination.

Hudson has been charged with First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Manslaughter and Felony Firearm. Hudson was arraigned this morning and was remanded to jail. His probable cause conference is on October 25, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. and his preliminary examination is on October 31, 2016 at 1:30 p.m.in 36th District Court before Judge Deborah Lewis Langston.

Southfield Woman Charged in Highland Park Car Crash Injuring Her Two Children

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Hope Ashley Blakes, 30 (DOB: 8/10/1986), of Southfield, with one count each of Operating a Motor Vehicle (MV) with a High BAC Causing Serious Injury, Operating a MV While Impaired, Operating a MV While Intoxicated with an Occupant less than 14, Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment of a Bodily Function, and Operating a MV While Intoxicated Causing Serious Injury.

On October 16, 2016 at 9:00 p.m. at Hamilton and Grove Streets in Highland Park it is alleged that the defendant was driving under the influence of intoxicants with her two daughters ages 7 (DOB: 11/18/2008) and 6 (DOB:4/15/2001) when she crashed her car. A 45-year-old Oak Park man was also a passenger in the car. Highland Park police were called to the scene of the injury accident and discovered two injured girls in the rear of the defendant’s car. The children were taken by medics to a local hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in the crash.

The defendant was alleged to be intoxicated and uncooperative with the police when she was placed under arrest at the scene. The defendant was arraigned yesterday in 30th District Court in Highland Park and she received a $75,000 cash/surety bond. Blakes has a probable cause conference on November 1, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Brigette Officer-Hill.

Inkster Father and Girlfriend Charged in Death of Infant

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Aurelio R. Smith, 41 (DOB: 8/10/1975) and his girlfriend Andrea A. Bracy, 21 (DOB: 6/28/1995), both of Inkster, in connection with the death of Defendant Smith’s infant son Tyme Smith, who turned three on January 13, 2013. On October 13, 2016 at approximately 2:00 a.m. in an apartment located in the 1550 block of Inkster Road, it is alleged that the defendants assaulted the infant. It is further alleged that several hours later, both defendants took the child to a local hospital for treatment. On the same day at 10:14 a.m., Inkster -more- 4 officers were dispatched to the hospital on a report of suspected child abuse and were taken into custody. The child died on October 13th at approximately 11:10 a.m. On Friday, October 14, 2016, the medical examiner found that the child died from blunt force trauma to his body and ruled the death a homicide. The facts and the evidence in this case will be introduced in court at the preliminary examination.

Smith and Bracy have each been charged with: Felony Murder, Torture, and Child Abuse First Degree. Both defendants were arraigned today. The bond for Smith is one million dollars cash, and the bond for Bracy is one million cash/surety. At the probable cause conference today, Judge Sabrina Johnson set the preliminary examination for November 2, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.

Detroit Man Charged in Kidnapping of Three-Year-Old Boy

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Michael Lee Grayson, 19 (DOB: 12/13/1996), of Detroit, with one count of Kidnapping – Child Enticement and one count of Unlawful Driving Away an Automobile. On October 20, 2016 at approximately 1:00 p.m., it is alleged that the defendant kidnapped his girlfriend’s three-year-old boy from a location in the 19300 block of Winston and drove away in a car. An Amber Alert was issued and Detroit police officers found the child unharmed in a car parked outside of an abandoned house in the 19300 block of Biltmore. Investigation by the Transit Police led to the arrest of Grayson on a DDOT bus at East Seven Mile and Ryan. The defendant is expected to be arraigned today at 2:30 p.m. in 36th District Court.

William Melendez - Former Inkster police officer convicted on March 4, 2016 of Assault With Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm Less Than Murder and sentenced to one year in prison in the assault of Floyd Dent. The Michigan Department of Corrections website reflects his earliest release date to be December 15, 2016 however it is unlikely that he will be released on that date. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office will be filing a formal objection to his being released early.
