Detroit Man Charged in Fatal Car Crash on Ewald Circle

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Levontae Deshawn Choice, 23 (DOB: 10/10/92), of Detroit in connection with a fatal car crash. On September 27, 2016 at approximately 2:10 a.m. it is alleged that Choice was driving while intoxicated at Ewald Circle and San Juan in Detroit when he struck a tree killing the 27-year-old male passenger in his car. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Choice has been charged with Reckless Driving Causing Death, Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License Causing Death, Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment, Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Impairment, and Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License Causing Serious Impairment.

Choice was arraigned at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Charles Anderson. The probable cause conference is scheduled for October 5, 2016 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for October 11, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Shannon Holmes in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $100,000 cash/surety bond.

Juvenile Male Charged in Whitehill Street Fatal Car Crash

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged a 16-year-old juvenile male (DOB: 07/07/2000) in connection with the fatal car crash that occurred on September 25, 2016 at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Whitehill Street, north of Casino Avenue in Detroit.

A 16-year-old male juvenile respondent was driving a car with two female passengers on residential street. It is alleged that the respondent did not have a driver’s license and was driving at a high rate of speed in a residential area with a posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour. It is further alleged that he lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. Medics pronounced the front seat passenger, Eliza Fletcher, aka Jadeliza Wright-McClain*, 15, of Detroit, dead at the scene. The back seat passenger, a 16-year-old Detroit female, survived the crash and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The juvenile respondent was also taken to the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash and has since been discharged this week. He was charged as a juvenile and arraigned in the late afternoon Tuesday, September 27, 2016 on the following counts: (1) Manslaughter with a Motor Vehicle; (2) Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment of a Body Function for the second passenger; (3) Moving Violation Causing Death; and (4) Moving Violation Causing Serious Impairment Of a Body Function). He is currently being held at the Juvenile Detention Facility on a $25,000/10% bond pending his next court appearance. His pre-trial is scheduled for 9:00AM on October 3, 2016 before the Honorable Christopher Dingell. A no-contact order is in place if he should make bond.

*Victim Jadeliza Wright McClain, has been identified by her brother in news reports as Eliza Fletcher. Police reports list her as Jadeliza Wright McCain.
