Safe Sleep Initiative

Did you know that every year more than a hundred infants die due to unsafe sleeping conditions? What is even scarier is that all of these deaths can be prevented by educating yourself on how to help your baby sleep safely. From siblings and grandparents to aunts, uncles, and babysitters, this information is not just for parents. Anyone who cares for a baby should be informed of safe sleeping habits and how to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Some common ways an infant is put at risk of suffocation are sleeping with parents and the placement of unnecessary items such as toys, pillows, and blankets in the crib.

The safest way for your baby to sleep is by placing the baby on their back in their own crib and without pillows, blankets, or toys.
Here are some tips that may help your baby to sleep safely
  • Do Place the baby to sleep alone in a crib or bassinet.
  • Do Place the baby to sleep on his/her back.
  • Do Have a sleeping area free of blankets, stuffed animals or crib bumpers.
  • Do Dress baby in a sleeper, and keep baby's face uncovered.
  • Do Take a portable crib to the babysitter and make sure they know how baby should sleep.
  • Do Have a firm mattress with a tight fitting sheet.
  • Do Use a crib that is approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
  • Don't sleep with your baby in a bed, chair or couch.
  • Don't put the baby to sleep on his tummy.
  • Don't put pillows, blankets, stuffed animals or bumper pads in the crib.
  • Don't allow your baby to sleep with other adults, children or pets.
  • Don't overheat your baby. Dress your baby in as much or as little clothing as you wear to bed.
  • Don't smoke around your baby-ever.
