With the beginning of the winter season upon us, I wanted to take the opportunity to communicate a few reminders and some updates on Wayne County road issues.

First of all, it is always good to be reminded about being safe while driving in winter road conditions. Please remember to reduce your speeds, leave extra room in front of your vehicle and make sure to give Wayne County's snowplows and salt trucks plenty of space for them to do their jobs and try to maintain the roads in the safest possible condition.

As always, you can use the Wayne County Compass website on your computer, tablet or mobile device to check traffic conditions, report road hazards, and to even track the progress of Wayne County trucks as they treat the roadways. Wayne County Compass can be accessed at www.compass.waynecounty.com.

Secondly, with the fall road construction season mostly over, I wanted to provide an update on some upcoming road projects in 2017 that will impact residents of the 14th Commission District.

The first and largest of these projects is the I-75 over the Rouge River project that will be overseen by the Michigan Department of Transportation. This $150 million project will begin on February 4th, 2017 when southbound I-75 will be closed for approximately two years between Springwells Street in Detroit to Northline Road in Taylor. The project will include the total replacement of the bridge deck of the Rouge River Bridge, the largest bridge of its kind in the State of Michigan. In addition, the project will make major improvements to the I-75 corridor throughout the Downriver Area, including the replacement of I-75 bridges over Fort Street, Goddard Road/Sexton-Kilfoil Drain, Northline Road, Allen Road, GTW Railroad, Eureka Road, the Blakely Drain, West Road, and Gibraltar Road. For more information on this project, you can visit MDOT's project website at www.75rougeriver.com.

In addition to the bridges being replaced as part of the larger I-75 project, there are a number of other road projects set to begin in 2017, including:

  • Dix-Toledo Bridge over Allen Road in Brownstown Township.
  • Repaving Van Horn Road from Telegraph Rd to Arsenal Road in Brownstown Township.
  • Resurfacing and culvert replacement on Pelham Road from Wick Road to Ecorse Road in Taylor.

As always, I am proud to serve as a Wayne County Commissioner and am looking forward to continuing to work hard on your behalf as we begin the new legislative term in 2017.

I wish all of you a Merry Christmas, a Happy Holiday Season, and a healthy and prosperous New Year!

Sincerely,

Raymond E. Basham
Wayne County Commissioner
District 14
