Commissioner Palamara opposes expansion of Riverview Landfill

Plans to expand the Riverview Land Preserve Solid Waste Landfill remain under consideration by a 9-member body known as he Wayne County Facility Inclusion Committee (WCFIC).

I want to let you know that I have been steadfast in my opposition to any expansion of this landfill.

I also want to let you know, that the decision of whether or not to allow the expansion of the landfill does not rest with the Wayne County Commission. The decision to allow the expansion to proceed or not lies with the 9-member WCFIC which has yet to set a date for its determination.

For decades, noise, odors and excessive traffic to and from the landfill have affected residents not only in Riverview, but bordering communities like Trenton and other Downriver communities as well.

Expansion plans would drastically reduce the buffer zone separating the landfill from nearby homes and businesses. As such, I do not believe the WCFIC should grant any expansion of landfill space in an area surrounded by residential neighborhoods.Sincerely,
Joseph Palamara
Wayne County Commissioner
