Virgil Smith - Former state senator charged in connection with a non-fatal shooting incident involving his ex-wife on Wexford Street. The May 22, 2019 pre-trial hearing has been adjourned to allow the court additional time to rule on the pending Motion for an Evidentiary Hearing. The motion hearing and the pre-trial conference have been adjourned by Judge Lawrence Talon until June 7, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.

Detroit Man Charged in Homicide
of Woman Discovered in Dumpster

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged James Quill Cockerham, 50 (DOB: 12/03/1968), in connection with the homicide of Elizabeth Candice-Nicole Laird, 27 (DOB: 04/09/1992), both of Detroit. On May 14, 2019, at approximately 11:45 p.m., police responded to an apartment in the 1600 block of Robert Bradby Drive in Detroit because Ms. Laird had been reported missing. On May 15, 2019 at approximately 8:45 a.m., police officers were dispatched to the same location and discovered human remains in an apartment dumpster. Ms. Laird was later identified as the victim.

On May 16, 2019, Cockerham was identified as a suspect in the homicide of Ms. Laird and the public was asked for assistance by the Detroit Police Department (DPD). As a result of tips and investigation by DPD, he was arrested on Saturday afternoon in the 8000 block of Stoepel in Detroit. More specific facts and evidence will be placed on the record in court at the Preliminary Examination.

Prosecutor Worthy said, "The evidence in this case shows that Ms. Laird was literally thrown away like garbage. Her life mattered, and we will work tirelessly to make sure that her alleged killer is brought to justice."*

Cockerham has been charged with First Degree Murder, Torture and Unlawful Imprisonment.* He was arraigned yesterday at 1:00 p.m. in 36th District Court before Magistrate Dawn White. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for May 31, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for June 7, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenyetta Stanford Jones in 36th District Court. The defendant was remanded to jail.

Chelsa Wagner and Khari Mosley - Today Ms. Wagner's husband, Khari Mosley had a Final Conference in 36th District Court before Judge Kenneth King. He did not appear and his attorney Charles Longstreet appeared on his behalf. Mr. Mosley's jury trial date is scheduled for Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at 9:00 a.m.

Ms. Wagner's Final Conference date is on June 19, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Dalton Roberson.

Detroit Man Charged in Sexual Assault of Juvenile

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Ali Sleiman Kdouh, 38 (DOB: 09/23/1980) of Detroit, in connection with a sexual assault of a 16-year-old Detroit juvenile male.

On May 22, 2019 at approximately 8:15 a.m., the 16-year-old juvenile male was walking to school in the area of Greydale and Pickford in Detroit when he noticed a vehicle following him. It is alleged that the defendant attempted to coax the victim into his vehicle, but the victim walked away and called 911.

In an attempt to evade the defendant, the juvenile male went into an abandoned garage, but was followed by the defendant. It is alleged that the defendant assaulted the juvenile, who escaped the abandoned garage, called 911 again and ran to another abandoned property. It is alleged the defendant followed him again and entered the abandoned house. The victim refused to enter the property and stood outside until police arrived. The defendant was arrested at the scene. Further facts and evidence of the case will be presented at the Preliminary Examination.

Kdouh has been charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct - Assault with Intent to Penetrate, Criminal Sexual Conduct - Second Degree, Criminal Sexual Conduct - Fourth Degree, Stalking a Minor, Indecent Exposure and Carrying a Concealed Weapon.*

Defendant Kdouh was arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Millicent Sherman. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for June 5, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for June 12, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Michael Wagner in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $75,000/10% bond, with tether.
