Two Charged in Fatal Shooting of DFD Firefighter

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Arondez Larry Carter, 18 (DOB: 03/24/2000), homeless, and Shomari Jahi Walker, 18 (DOB: 05/01/2000), of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Jack Wiley, 28, an off-duty Detroit Firefighter.

On August 21, 2018 at approximately 9:15 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a location in the 15000 block of Penrod Street in response to a request for a welfare check of the resident. Upon arrival, Detroit police officers discovered the lifeless body of the victim. Additionally, several items were missing from the location. It is alleged that both defendants were in Mr. Wiley's home and planned to rob him. During the course of the robbery, Mr. Wiley was shot and killed. The defendants then took Mr. Wiley's belongings and fled the scene. S ome of the stolen goods were located, but were found burned.

Both defendants have been charged with First Degree Premeditated Murder, Felony Murder, Armed Robbery, Tampering with Evidence, 4th Degree Arson, and Felony Firearm.*

Carter and Walker were arraigned on August 26, 2018 in 34th District Court in Romulus. The Probable Cause Conferences are scheduled for September 5, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge William McConico. The Preliminary Examinations are scheduled for September 12, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. in 36th District Court. Both defendants were remanded to jail.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
