Detroit Man Charged in Assault of Reporters and Police Officer

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Edmund Lionel Gilliam, 60 (DOB: 01/07/1958), of Detroit, in connection with threatening two reporters and damaging their work vehicles, as well as assaulting a Detroit police officer.

On August 2, 2018, at 6:15, it is alleged that Gilliam used a metal pole threatening a woman reporter and a cameraman from WXYZ and striking their news van, causing damage. He is also alleged to have threatened a male reporter from WWJ with a metal pole and striking the WWJ news truck and causing damage. The defendant left the scene, but the police observed him at a location in the 3300 block of Tyler. When the defendant was commanded to stop by the police, he fled on foot. When a police officer attempted to arrest Gilliam, it is alleged that he grabbed a piece of concrete and threw it, striking the officer in the knee. Another officer tased Gilliam and he was placed under arrest.

Gilliam has been charged with three counts of Felonious Assault, one count of Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer, and four counts of Malicious Destruction of Property $200-$1000.*

Gilliam was arraigned in 34th District Court on Saturday, August 4, 2018 before 34th District Court Magistrate Linda Mack. The probable cause conference is scheduled for August 13, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for August 20, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge William McConico in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $50,000/10% bond.
