Detroit Woman Charged in Double Fatal Car Crash
at Chalmers and Franklin Streets

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Markia Pitts, 22 (DOB: 08/01/1996), of Detroit, in connection with a car crash that killed a 31-year-old woman and 34-year-old man. On July 9, 2019 at 3:50 p.m., the defendant was driving a white sedan in the area of East Outer Drive. It is alleged that while making an improper turn, she was struck by a black sedan, driven by a woman. When the defendant failed to stop after the accident, the black car followed her and attempted to signal the defendant to pull over.

The defendant failed to pull over and, at Franklin and Chalmers Streets, it is alleged that she drove at a high rate of speed, disregarded a stop sign, and crashed into a blue sedan. The blue car was driven by a 34-year-old man, with a 31-year-old woman in the front passenger seat and a man in the rear passenger seat. All of the victims are from Detroit. Detroit EMS and Universal Medics arrived on the scene and the victims were transported to a local hospital. The driver and the woman in the front passenger seat were pronounced deceased at the hospital. The rear passenger survived but sustained several serious injuries as a result of the crash.

Pitts has been charged with: two counts of Reckless Driving Causing Death, one count of Reckless Driving Causing Serious Impairment of a Bodily Function, and one count of Failure to Stop at Scene of Property Damage Accident.* She was arraigned this afternoon in 36th District Court. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for July 19, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for July 26, 2019. The defendant was remanded to jail. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Detroit Police Department.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
