Gas Station Clerk Charged in Non-Fatal Shooting Over Stolen Chips

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged gas station clerk Safaa H. Marzok, 27 (DOB: 08/12/1991) of Detroit, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of 22-year-old Tavarlis Durham, also of Detroit, at a gas station located in the 17700 block of West Warren.

On July 23, 2019 at 10:30 p.m., Marzok was working in the store portion of the gas station when he had a verbal argument with Durham and another 22-year-old Detroit man. After words were exchanged, he observed Durham holding the door for the other man, who took several bags of potato chips and walked toward the door without paying for the merchandise. It is alleged that Marzok retrieved a gun and ran from behind the counter, pointing the gun at the man holding the chips. As the man with the chips continued walking toward the door, it is alleged that Marzok fired the weapon through the glass door, striking Durham. Durham was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Marzok has been charged with two counts of Assault With Intent to Murder, two counts of Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, Discharge of a Weapon in a Building Causing Injury, Tampering with Evidence, Obstruction of Justice and five counts of Felony Firearm.*

Marzok was arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Millicent Sherman. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for August 8, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for August 15, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Michael Wagner in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $100,000 cash/surety bond.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
