Detroit Man Charged in Fatal Car Crash

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged David Ponce, 20, (DOB: 03/29/1998), of Detroit, in connection with a fatal car crash that killed Makayla Thomas, age 23.

On July 1, 2018 at approximately 1:40 a.m., Detroit police responded to the scene of a car crash at Livernois and West Seven Mile Road in Detroit. Upon arrival, it was determined that the vehicle driven by the defendant, with two passengers, was traveling northbound on Livernois at a high rate of speed. It is alleged that he disregarded a red light at West Seven Mile Road and collided into two vehicles that were traveling westbound on Seven Mile, with a green light.

Medics transported the drivers of the two vehicles, as well as one passenger from the defendant's vehicle to a local hospital for treatment. Another passenger in the defendant's vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The defendant was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was placed under arrest at the scene.

Ponce has been charged with Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, Reckless Driving Causing Death and Operating - Minor with Blood Alcohol Content*.

Ponce was arraigned at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Millicent Sherman. The probable cause conference is scheduled for July 10, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for July 16, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge William McConico in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $1 million dollar cash/surety bond.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
