Downriver Mother Charged After Infant Left Unattended in Vehicle

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Jamie Lyn Stefanko, 35 (DOB: 07/06/1982), of Ecorse, in connection with leaving her infant child unattended in her car in the Southgate Sam's Club parking lot.

On March 14, 2018 at approximately 5:00 p.m., Southgate police officers were dispatched to the Sam's Club parking lot in the 15000 block of Northline Road in Southgate in response to a report of a child left in a vehicle unattended. Upon arrival, the officers observed the child in the vehicle unattended. The defendant was arrested at the scene.

Stefanko has been charged with misdemeanors Child Abuse - Fourth Degree and Child-Abuse -Leaving a Child Unattended in a Vehicle*. She was arraigned on the warrant today in 28th District Court and received a $500 bond. As a condition of bond the defendant is restricted from using alcohol, going to establishments serving alcohol, must not possess firearms, and cannot possess drugs. The pretrial hearing is on March 23, 2018 at 9:00 a.m.

*The charges are allegations unless and until the defendant is convicted.
