Detroit Father Charged in Toddler Son's Shooting

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Melvin Cooley Cline, III, 34 (DOB: 11/04/1983), of Detroit, in connection with the shooting of his three-year-old son, Melvin Cooley Cline, IV. On May 8, 2018 at approximately 10:00 a.m., at a residence in the 5900 block of Marcus in Detroit, it is alleged that during an argument between Cline and his child's mother, the toddler picked up a firearm in the living room. The weapon discharged, striking the child. The child was privately conveyed to a local hospital for emergency treatment.

Investigation by Detroit Police officers led to the arrest of Cline. It is alleged that the defendant left a loaded firearm accessible to his son while in his care and a resident of his household. It is further alleged that Cline failed to provide a safe environment for his son.

Cline has been charged with Child Abuse - Second Degree, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Felony Firearm*. Cline was arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Jeffrey Kleparek. The probable cause conference is scheduled for May 17, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for May 22, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. Both hearings are before Judge William McConico in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $100,000 cash/surety bond.
