Macomb Man Charged in Coney Island Non-Fatal Shooting

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Engjull Thaqi, 45 (DOB: 09/23/1972), of Macomb, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of Eugene Lorenzo Lyons, 23, of Detroit. On May 20, 2018 at approximately 2:40 p.m. at a coney island in the 830 block of East McNichols in Detroit, it is alleged that the defendant was working at the restaurant, had an argument with Lyons, and asked him to leave. Shortly thereafter, Lyons returned and went to the rear parking lot of the restaurant. It is alleged that Thaqi shot at Lyons with a handgun several times, wounding him once in the leg. Lyons was transported to a local hospital and Thaqi was arrested at the scene.

The defendant has been charged with one count each of Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm, Felonious Assault, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon with Unlawful Intent, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and four counts of Felony Firearm*. Thaqi was arraigned on the warrant at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Dawn White. The probable cause conference is scheduled for May 29, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for June 4, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenneth King in 36th District Court.
