Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Lawrence Turvill, 68 (DOB: 2/14/17), of Detroit, with six counts of Felonious Assault, five counts of Resisting and Obstructing the Police and nine counts of Felony Firearm.*

On March 21, 2017 at 4:01 p.m., a 36th District Court officer went to a location in the 820 block of Wheelock with a valid eviction notice and when he attempted to tow the defendant’s van from the location, it is alleged that the defendant made verbal threats from inside his van. Detroit police officers were called to the location and the defendant refused to leave van. After a short period of time, it is alleged that Turvill exited the van armed with a rifle and fired it in the direction of one the officers. The officer fired his weapon and shot Turvill, who then fled back into his van, refusing to come out. Dispatch was notified of the barricaded gunman situation and, after several hours of police negotiations, the defendant surrendered and was taken to a local hospital for treatment for non-fatal gunshot wound.

Turvill was arraigned this afternoon before Magistrate Laura Echartea in 36th District Court. The probable cause conference is scheduled for March 31, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for April 6, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Deborah Lewis Langston in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $500,000 cash/surety bond.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
