Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Valerie Margaret Mathews, 28 (DOB: 11/24/1988), of Sterling Heights, in connection with an extended vehicle chase through Detroit and Hamtramck.

It is alleged that on April 4, 2017, two Detroit Police officers were dispatched to the area of Gable Street near Stockton in Detroit. Upon arrival at the scene, their investigation led them to a suspicious van. Police followed the van and, despite the activated overhead police lights, the defendant refused to pull over. The van continued throughout areas of Detroit and Hamtramck before the defendant exited the vehicle and tried to run. Hamtramck police officers pursued the defendant on foot and arrested her.

Mathews is charged with Fleeing and Eluding – Third Degree*. She was arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Bari Blake Wood. The probable cause conference is scheduled for April 13, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for April 19, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Deborah Lewis Langston in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $50,000/10% bond.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
