Monique Baker McCormick (Dist. 6)

About Monique Commissioner Monique Baker McCormick is grateful to have been re-elected for a third term in November 2022.

Because of the 2022 redistricting, the commission's District 6 boundaries have changed. She ran and won her re-election in this new district with 87 percent of the vote to become the first African American commissioner in Redford Township and continues to proudly serve part of northwest Detroit in the community where she was born and raised.

Commissioner Monique Baker McCormick is a Democrat, mother, veteran of the U.S. Army, businesswoman and has a master's degree in business from Walsh College of Business and Accountancy. She is a licensed Michigan Real Estate broker/owner of McCormick Real Estate and Financial Group, a full-service real estate company located in northwest Detroit and is celebrating 28 years in the real estate industry.

Legislative Leadership

Commissioner Baker McCormick serves on the Committee on Health and Human Services, is chair of the Special Committee on the Wayne County Commission Youth Council and serves on the committees of Economic Development and Ways and Means. She is also vice-chair of the Special Committee on Behavioral Health and serves on the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority Board of Directors. Additionally, she is a legacy member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Commissioner Baker McCormick is most proud that in 2020 her colleagues unanimously supported a resolution by her to create the Wayne County Commission Youth Council (WCCYC), dedicated to empowering youth and promoting education, community involvement and civic engagement. Its goal is to bring together youth from varied socioeconomic backgrounds and multicultural neighborhoods to assist in planning, developing and implementing activities and services that help young people in Wayne County have a voice and become socially responsible community members. With the support of Commissioner Baker McCormick, WCCYC has sponsored resolutions addressing youth mental health, gun reform and economic oppression. Applications for WCCYC open in August of each year.

Commissioner Baker McCormick is a graduate of Henry Ford High School and Ludington Magnet Middle School, located in her commission district. She was an active parent and president of the PTA in the Detroit Public Schools Community District at J.R. King Elementary School, Ludington Magnet Middle School and Cass Technical High School, from which both of her daughters graduated.

Commissioner Baker McCormick believes in service, not only to her community, but service to her country. In 1988, she joined the U.S. Army and served honorably until 1996 as an Army Motor Transport Operator (MOS 88M) providing Army mobility through the transport of personnel and cargo.

In 2015, Baker McCormick was nominated by Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence to represent the 14th Congressional District in the prestigious Congressional Black Caucus Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C.

Commissioner Baker McCormick, as chair of Health and Human Services, was appointed to serve on the board of Wayne County HealthChoice, which provides a variety of health care options for small businesses and seniors who qualify. She was appointed to serve as a member of the National Association of Counties (NACo), chair of the Community, Economic and Workforce Development-Housing steering committee and in 2022 was appointed to NACo National Taskforce on Housing.

Commissioner Baker McCormick has led efforts to mitigate foreclosures and keep American families in their homes during the housing and economic crises, notably through her resolution to increase African American homeownership, which is now a national initiative for NACo.

In Commissioner Baker McCormick's third term she has gained a reputation as a fearless and outspoken advocate for veterans, children and working class people. She is continuing to fight the "War on Trash" - an educational anti-littering campaign she created in her Northwest Detroit district. Commissioner Baker McCormick believes that "where there is trash, there is more crime."

Thus, she partnered with the Downtown Detroit Partnership, Detroit Public Schools Community District and District 6 residents and volunteers to clean up the neighborhoods, purchased and requested trash cans, blight enforcement and education. Decorative trash cans that had been purchased were placed throughout District 6.

She continues to educate residents in District 6 by offering "Getting to Know Wayne County" - quarterly community meetings to empower residents with information and resources to improve their conditions.

Commissioner Baker McCormick has sponsored notable resolutions having a lasting impact on Wayne County residents, including Operation Green Light honoring veterans, military caregiver assistance, African American homeownership, absentee voting drop boxes, early COVID-19 testing, COVID-19 mental health, Pet Therapy Month, death-in-custody checkbox reporting, National Disability Awareness Month, Wayne County Commission Youth Council and War on Trash.
