Livonia School Reports Norovirus Outbreak Amongst Students

Wayne County Gives Tips To Prevent and Stop Spread

DETROIT, MI - Wayne County Public Health Division (WCPHD) was notified of a viral gastroenteritis (GI) outbreak by the school on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. As of now, there are 100 students and 15 staff that have developed symptoms. WCPHD is working closely with the school and has provided recommendations including disinfection of facility per Michigan Department of Health and Human Service guidelines, ensuring ill persons are excluded from school until 48 hours after their symptoms have stopped, and guidance to parents and staff on viral gastroenteritis.

Though several viruses can cause gastroenteritis, Norovirus is the most common. Viral GI illnesses are highly contagious and spread easily through food/liquids, by person-to-person contact, or through contaminated surfaces. Norovirus often causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramping. Symptoms may also include low-grade fever, headache, weakness, and muscle aches. Symptoms typically begin 24-48 hours after exposure but can be as early as 10 hours. The illness is usually brief, lasting 1 to 2 days. Most viral GI illnesses like Norovirus get better on their own with rest and hydration. Some cases, usually in the very young or elderly, need hospitalization mainly due to dehydration. Anyone with high fevers, bloody diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, signs of dehydration or not able to stay hydrated, or worsening symptoms, should seek medical attention immediately.

Measures to prevent and stop spread of viral GI illness like Norovirus include:

· Frequent hand washing for at least 20 seconds with soap and water especially before/after caring for or cleaning up after someone who is ill. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers do not work well against viruses like Norovirus.

· Promptly disinfect contaminated surfaces with household chlorine bleach-based cleaners or other EPA-registered disinfectants

· Wash soiled clothing and linens thoroughly and wear disposable rubber gloves while handling soiled items

· Wash fruits and vegetables and cook seafood thoroughly

· Avoiding food or water from sources that may be contaminated
